31 Days of Wisdom

It’s October 1st already, can you believe it?  This month, I’m participating the 31 Days of Change with The Nester.  My focus will be on wisdom because right now {as if this isn’t true any other time} I’m in need of some wisdom.

The mission: To read through a chapter of Proverbs each day and write some reflections on any part that speaks to me.

If you’d like to join me, you can read through them with me and post your own reflections here in the comments section. Just like a Bible study, we can dialogue in community on line.  Or if you’re a blogger and you’d like to do your own 31 day challenge (or 30, 29, or 28… come on, let’s not get religious about it) then link it up here.

Here goes Proverbs 1:

“Let the wise hear and increase in learning,
and the one who understands obtain guidance,
to understand a proverb and a saying,
the words of the wise and their riddles.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Last weekend I had the great privilege of teaching at a women’s retreat.  The best and most humbling thing I heard from someone on the last day was “I’m going home in love with God’s word and a desire to read and understand my Bible.”  This kind of fire, this kind of hopeful joy can only come from the Spirit of God. Amen.  And the joy spurred me on to pray…

God increase my learning, guide me and help me understand your words.

A healthy fear is a fear that keeps you on the right track and alert to the instruction you’ve been given {think back to when you were little}.

God, keep me fearful as I am fearfully and wonderfully made… humble me so I can hear, give me courage and wisdom to discern your voice from the many voices in this world.

“but whoever listens to me will dwell secure
and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.”

The verses preceding outline what the alternative is…and I don’t want that. Disaster is inevitable but live without fear of it… to dwell secure and be at ease… this should be our prayer.

Lord help us to

know you,

trust you,

believe you,

hear you

so that what may ever may come,

we will dwell securely in the palm of your hand.

Amen.
