Proverbs 2: Praying for our Sons {Day 4}

How lovely is Jesus?

I have to admit, every once in a while I have a freak out/sad moment when I see what my boys are valuing. What they think is funny, what they want to listen to, watch or be around. Then I remember when I was their age, I was a lot worse. When I was their age, I didn’t have an understand of the gospel, I didn’t have a constant flow of Jesus coming into my life and when I did… it was unbeknownst to me.

Lately, I have been moved to pray for my boys specifically that Jesus would become more lovely to them than anything else. The best way to fight against temptation is when Jesus is more beautiful than our idols and grace overwhelms us more than the things of this world that make us feel good for just a little while.

Today… let’s pray the Spirit of God quickens the hearts of our boys to seek Him and treasure Him as though there is nothing more valuable.

 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. {Matthew 6:21}

Let’s pray so when their faith is tested, it will become more and more genuine and will result in praise, honor and glory to God. It’s true… life gets harder in a lot of ways as we get older. As our kids get bigger, our concerns for them are also bigger. But God… He can increase their faith and make them stronger through these things.

“In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, {1 Peter 1:6-8}

Let’s pray for our boys to see Jesus as the most treasured and valuable element of their whole being. So much so that they become people who are marked by joy that is inexpressible and point others to Jesus.

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” {Matthew 13:44}

I am compelled to ask the question today… as a praying parent, where is your treasure? Let’s spend a few moments today reflecting on how lovely Jesus is, shall we?
